A 44-year-old Albanian was arrested in Greece for trafficking antiques worth

An anonymous tip led to the arrest of a 44-year-old Albanian antiquities trafficker in Vatondas on the island of Evia.

The 44-year-old Albanian intended to sell the antiques to a buyer for nearly 100,000 euros, according to "Kathimerini". The coins were part of a "treasure" from an ancient tomb. Among them was a silver tetradrachm depicting Alexander the Great and Zeus, worth €5,000.

The coins date between 320 and 280 BC, originating from the same archaeological site.

After an investigation, officers found more antiquities hidden in a makeshift hut in Nea Artaki. Antiquities will be evaluated at the New Archaeological Museum of Chalkis "Arethousa".

Dimitris Christodoulou, director of the Ephorate of Antiquities Evia, stated that the coins must have been stored in an airtight clay vessel found inside the tomb, while 22 coins show Alexander the Great and Zeus. Moreover, as it appears from the hair forks and rings found by the police, the trafficker had destroyed a woman's grave. "The tomb predates the coins by half a millennium," concluded Christodoulou
