Rexhep Vathi from Derveni, Kruja, who committed suicide a year ago, is one of the perpetrators of the murder of 18-year-old Antonio Karafili in Voskopoja, Korça.
Unable to pursue criminal prosecution against him because he has been dead since 2024, the Korça prosecution has dismissed the charges against him, continuing with the sending of file No. 1420 for judicial review with the sole defendant, Kejsi Spaillari.
The investigative file provided by "Ora News" journalist Elton Qyno provides the full dynamics of how the event unfolded on June 14, 2018.
After the serious crime of strangling Antonio with a sheet and then hanging him from a tree branch in Voskopoja, the perpetrator, Rexhep Vathi, went to the family of the deceased Antonio Karafili for consolation.
Such a fact emerged during the testimony of the victim's mother, citizen Stefani Karafili, who gave two testimonies to the Korça prosecutor's office on June 2018 and September 27, 2022.
Stefani Karafili said that on the day of the incident, June 14, 2018, he had seen Rexhep Vathi in Voskopoja only once when he went up to their bar.
Antonio's mother, among other things, explained that when they were coming down from Voskopoja, after picking up Antonio, she saw citizen Rexhep Vathi on the way, he was at the door of the bar.
"...while the second time, I saw Vathi the day he came to our house for consolation, together with citizen Gani Selaci and another person from Elbasan...", stated Setfani Karafili.
Asked if Antonio had ever stayed at the tavern (the family's place) before, she states that Antonio did not have a key to the tavern, they only had one key that they had given to Rexhepi, moreover, the tavern in Voskopoja was not a place to stay.
The declarant states that on the day of the incident, Antonio had both the watch and the pendant in his hand, which were later handed over broken by his girlfriend, Kejsi Spaillari.
According to the testimony of the victim's mother, the person who took her to the area where Antonio Karafili's dead body was located was his then 17-year-old girlfriend, Kejsi Spaillari.
On the day of the event, Antonio Karafili was in the company of his girlfriend and their acquaintance, Rexhep Vathi, who had come from the Kruja area to Voskopoja after bringing beehives to this area every year.
The declarant explained that on the way to Voskopoja, Kejsi seemed shaken, unfocused and did not speak at all.
"...I asked Casey why she had left Antonio and returned to Korça on her own, but she didn't answer me and seemed worried...", Stefania said.
When they arrived at the bar, located at "Ura e Kovaçit", Mikeli got out of the car and went to a citizen named Rexhep, who was keeping bees, and asked him if he had seen Antonio, but Rexhep told him that he had not.
The declarant asked Casey which route they had taken with Antonio and Casey, took the car and walked towards the road that leads to a stone quarry.
While walking, not seeing anything, the declarant told Casey to leave, but Casey insisted on continuing on his way and said: "...We'll go a little further...", while walking Casey said: "...Here's Antonio...".
Antonio was hanging from a pine branch by the roadside, his tongue sticking out, his eyes open, and his body still warm.
Stefani Karafili, has claimed to the prosecution that she tried, together with her son Mikel, to untie the sheet with which the deceased was hanged, but it was impossible.
The mother told her other son, Mikel, to go to the bar where Rexhepi was and get a knife. Mikel went to Rexhepi, where he got the knife, and returned in Kejsi's car.
After she cut the sheet, they put Antonio in the car and called her husband, informing him of the incident.
The investigation into this incident initially began on the charge of "Causing suicide", but after 7 years of verification, the Korça prosecution has concluded that the perpetrators of the strangulation with a sheet and then hanging of the victim from a tree are Rexhep Vathi from Kruja and the victim's girlfriend, Kejsi Spaillari./ Oranews
