A 48-year-old Albanian appeared on Monday before the criminal court of Brussels, after he was caught with 20 kilograms of cocaine in his suitcase.
According to the Albanian, he had been unemployed for two years and had more than 40 thousand euros in debt. He hoped to pay off some of it with the shipping money he would receive.
The Albanian was arrested at Brussels airport on June 15. When he wanted to leave the baggage hall, he was stopped by customs because he had arrived at the airport on a flight from Frankfurt but had a suitcase with him that came from Cancun, Mexico.
The Albanian immediately admitted that he had been asked to take the suitcase with him from the airport, but the suitcase turned out to have nothing suspicious.
Customs officers then searched the baggage carousel for the flight from Cancun and found another suitcase that looked exactly like the first. It turned out that 20 kilograms of cocaine were hidden in it.
The prosecution published on Monday a sentence of 36 months in prison against the Albanian, but his lawyer asked for a lighter sentence. " Actually, my client did not traffic drugs in the country," said Ibrahim Uckuyulu.
"The drug entered the country without his help, he only tried to take it out of the airport, in any case, he cannot be prosecuted as a member of a criminal association or organization, he only had contact with him as a kind of order," added the lawyer.
Another person had promised him 8,000 euros, and my client hoped to pay off part of his debts after two years of unemployment.
The court will make its decision on August 30.
