New details have come to light regarding the tragedy in the Albanian family living in Porcari, near Lucca in Italy.

The couple Arti and Jonida Kola, 48 and 42 years old, as well as their two children, Hadjari, 23, and Jessica, 15, were found dead in their apartment and are suspected of being poisoned by carbon monoxide that leaked from the heating device.

The family had bought the house only a year and a half ago and had moved in just five months ago, Italian media wrote .

The head of the family, Arti Kola, was a worker in a company as a painter, while Jonida Kola, the wife, was a housewife. Their son, Hajdari, worked as an electrician in a private company, while Jessica, the daughter, was in school.

A fifth person was rescued, but is in critical condition. He is the brother of the deceased head of the family, who arrived at the scene after the family was not answering their calls.

Two carabinieri officers who arrived at the scene to provide first aid were also injured. Fortunately, their lives are out of danger.

The alarm was raised by calling the emergency number 112 after someone inside the house reported feeling unwell.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m., emergency crews arrived and, upon entering the apartment, found a dramatic scene: the bodies of four family members were already dead. According to initial investigations, the gas leak appears to have been accidental.

Reaction from Italian authorities

The serious incident occurred yesterday evening in the family's apartment. Initial investigations suggest that the family members were poisoned by a carbon monoxide leak from a heating device.

The mayor of Porcari in Italy, Leonardo Fornaciari, expressed his deep shock and sadness over the tragedy.

“Last night, a great tragedy occurred in our city. An entire family lost their lives in their home. The investigation will shed light on this matter, but the cause appears to be carbon monoxide. The Kola family, including father Arti, mother Jonida, and their children Hajdar and Jessica, were very respected and loved by our community. We are all shocked and saddened by this event, which immediately reminded me of the tragedy of the Malanca family, which occurred in February 1992. Our community expresses its sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of the Kola family for this grave loss that has affected all of Porcari,” he wrote.
