Two Albanian brothers, internationally wanted for years, have been arrested in Italy after 27 years on the run for blood feud. They are Artur and Arben Mehilli , convicted of murder and who had escaped justice for more than two decades.
The two brothers Artur and Arben Mëhilli were officially declared wanted by the Albanian justice system a quarter of a century ago. In 2001, the Court of Lushnja sentenced them in absentia to a total of 32 years in prison for the murder of young Rezar Metaj in 1999 in Lushnja. The incident was considered revenge, since in 1997 the victim had killed their brother, Sokol Mëhilli, without being arrested by the police.
After the crime, the two brothers fled to Italy, where they lived on the run for more than 25 years. With false identities, registered as Artur Davidhi and Arben Gjermeni , they managed to build a life in the neighboring country and even secure residence permits.
Their discovery came after a tip from Italy that some of their family members were living in the same area as two people with suspicious identities. In the absence of fingerprints in Albania, Interpol Tirana provided old photographs of the two brothers.
To confirm the identity, the authorities used modern "Facial Recognition" technology. Comparing the features between old photos and images sent by the Italian side led to the conclusion that these were the same people declared internationally wanted.
At the time of the crime, Artur was 33 years old and Arben was 27. Today, they were arrested in Italy at the ages of 60 and 54. The two brothers were sentenced to 32 years in prison for premeditated murder and illegal possession of weapons.
Sokol Mëhilli, killed in 1997, turns out to be the father of journalist Stenaldo Mëhilli, recently known to the public from his participation in a reality show, where he confessed that he lost his father when he was only one month old.
Following the arrest, Albanian and Italian authorities are cooperating to complete the extradition procedures of Artur and Arben Mëhilli to Albania, where they are expected to serve their sentences.
