Murder of Klajdi Bitri, Prosecution requests harsher sentence for perpetrator:

The Court of Appeal in Ancona is reviewing the case against Fatah Melloul, sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of 23-year-old Albanian Klajdi Bitri. The prosecution is seeking confirmation of his guilt, rejecting claims of self-defense.

In today's session, Attorney General Roberto Rossi emphasized that the crime cannot be considered self-defense, but a deliberate act following a traffic conflict.

According to Italian media, the incident occurred on August 27, 2023 in Sirolo, following an argument where a 29-year-old Algerian, Fatah Melloul, killed a 23-year-old Albanian, Klajdi Bitri, with a rifle.

After the crime, the defendant fled the scene and was arrested a few hours later by the carabinieri in Falconara, while returning from the coast where he had been with his girlfriend.

In the first instance, Melloul was sentenced to 18 years in prison. During the Appeals hearing, Melloul requested a review of the charge on the grounds of self-defense.

"We are human beings and human beings make mistakes. I don't know how it could have happened. It was a hot day and I couldn't understand anything. I took the spear to scare them visually; I didn't realize that someone had died,"  he told the court.

He also apologized.  "I apologize to the Municipality of Sirolo, where I spent some wonderful moments," the Algerian said.

His defense attorney requested a reduction in the charge, arguing for mitigating circumstances.

The Court of Appeal's decision is expected to be announced on June 10. Meanwhile, the victim's family has launched a civil lawsuit through a law firm in Italy.
