Members of a drug gang who smuggled £1 million worth of cocaine into the UK in brooms by coating it with a chemical process "invisible to the human eye" have been jailed for a total of 135 years.

The gang trafficked 580 brooms in a shipping container from Colombia to an industrial estate in the United Kingdom in October 2021.

This is the first time that the "new" method is used to bring drugs into the country, according to the English Police. A forensic expert who took over the case said he had never heard of this method before. They used the scientists' knowledge to discover how the class A drug could then be extracted from the broomsticks.

However, the drug did not circulate on the market. Seven people were found guilty after a lengthy trial, almost two years after they were arrested following a joint operation by the Met and the National Crime Agency.

Six people were jailed for 135 years at Kingston Crown Court on Thursday.

Yuni Alexis Pacheco Miranda, 65, and Daniel Oliver, 52, from Margate, Kent were both jailed for 29 years. Nigel Rogers, 62, from Whitstable, Kent, and Albanian Ermal Shtrezi, 41, were jailed for 23 years. Frank Asante, 48, from west London, was jailed for 18 years, while Terrence Allen, 74, from south-east London, was jailed for 13 years.

A seventh defendant, William Adams, 76, of Sittingbourne in Kent, was due to be sentenced on Thursday but sentencing was postponed to a later date due to his health. According to court documents, the brooms were found near a cleaning company owned by Allen in the industrial area. A police search also found cocaine, MDMA, amphetamines and cannabis in the company's safe. Meanwhile, another 118,400 pounds were found in the house of Ermal Shtrez.
