An Albanian has been arrested by Italian police after being caught with a large amount of cocaine in his vehicle, during a check on the highway near Fiorenzuola.
According to Italian media, the suspect was traveling on the Autostrada e Diellit towards the Adriatic, while in his SUV he was transporting drugs worth around half a million euros. The operation took place in the Arda Ovest service area, where the traffic police stopped the vehicle for a routine check.
From the very beginning, the driver of the vehicle showed signs of nervousness and gave unclear answers about the purpose of the trip. The lack of luggage increased the suspicions of the officers, who decided to conduct a more detailed inspection of the vehicle.
During the search, a secret compartment was discovered inside the SUV, where 40 cellophane-wrapped packages were hidden, containing a total of 43 kilograms of cocaine. Analyses by the scientific police in Piacenza confirmed the nature of the narcotic substance.
The investigation continued with the search of a second vehicle owned by the arrested person. In this vehicle, a double floor was found, where another kilogram of cocaine was hidden, bringing the total quantity seized to over 44 kilograms.
During the operation, authorities also seized over 10,000 euros, suspected of being linked to criminal activity.
The intervention was carried out at around 20:00 by a patrol of the Lodi traffic police, part of the Guardamiglio motorway subsection (Piacenza Nord). After the arrest, the Albanian citizen was taken to the Piacenza prison, where he will face charges of possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute.
Italian authorities stressed that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to crack down on drug trafficking and increase security on the country's main roads.
