A young Albanian man, arrested in October 2023 after being caught with a 'bar' in Great Britain, has been sentenced to 21 months in prison.
Selim Gjuni was arrested while he was asleep in a flat in Lichfield Close, Ashington, Northumberland, where cannabis was grown.
Gjun was told by the court that he will be deported immediately after serving his sentence.
Jeremy Barton, defending the young man, said: “This defendant came to the UK in 2022 by dinghy. It will come as no surprise that his reasons for coming to the UK were for good reasons. Very few people make such life-threatening journeys, but his father became deeply in debt due to his addiction to alcohol and gambling. The reason for leaving was because of threats because his father could not pay his debts.
He does not suggest that he was forced against his will. John expected a financial reward for what he was doing. He is worried about what will happen if he returns to Albania".
