The elderly couple, Kosta Ilia, 84, and Kleoniqi Ilia, 88, were found dead this morning inside their apartment in the village of Bodrishte in Dropulli. Kleonić's sister, who lives in Greece, called one of their neighbors in the morning because the couple was not answering her calls.
She entered their apartment around 6 am and found Kosta Ilia dead at the entrance of the apartment with a hit mark on the right side of the head, and then Kleoniq further inside. The elderly had signs of violence on their bodies, which initially led to suspicions that they might have been the victims of a robbery.
Further preliminary investigations this morning did not find any outside intervention in the apartment nor signs of robbery. The most convincing track where the investigations are focused is that of the crime in the family where it is believed that the two elderly people had a conflict with each other and were hit with hard objects. However, investigations continue. Forensic experts from Tirana have been called and the results of the DNA analysis are awaited to see if there were external factors that led to this crime.
The elderly lived alone in a modest village dwelling as they had no children. The only ones interested in them were relatives, brothers and sisters who lived in Greece, TCH reports.
Kosta Ilia had returned from Greece only 5 days ago, where he had gone to withdraw his pension. The statements of the neighbors are somewhat contradictory. Some of them claimed that the couple lived in peace and others spoke of violent conflicts between them thanks to the mental health problems of Kosta Ilias who was treated in recent years with medication.
Sources from the police also confirm that they have found a sum of old people's pension money in the apartment. Pensions from the Greek state were the only income for them. Robberies of the elderly in this isolated area of the country have not been unusual situations in the past. During the last decade, there have been at least 3 cases with tragic consequences where elderly people have lost their lives in robbery. For this reason, this track has not been excluded from the investigation of this crime.
