
Ecuadorian police and military have destroyed a criminal cartel after a shootout in the encirclement, freeing 5 hostages, including 2 Albanians.
The Ecuadorian Army itself confirmed the news through its Facebook account.
The operation was carried out in the Santa Elena area, where an entire arsenal of weapons was seized and 4 people were arrested.
"The Ecuadorian army, together with other state institutions, carried out a raid and search in a property located in the Rinconada and Ayampe sectors, in the province of Santa Elena, where they were met with gunfire. During the clash, a suspected criminal was shot. After controlling the area, five kidnapped people were rescued, three of Ecuadorian nationality and two Albanians. Four people were captured in the military operation," the statement said.
During the operation, various pieces of evidence were also seized, such as: 4 pistol-type firearms; 74 9 mm caliber shells; 6 cell phones.
The shooter, still unidentified, is suspected of belonging to the Organized Armed Group "Los Choneros", but the names of the hostages were not released.
The confiscated and seized items were handed over to the competent authorities for the relevant legal procedures.
