In June 2021, a family crime shocked Tirana, after Mejit Picari killed his son-in-law, Kudret Saliaj, who was in the process of divorcing his daughter, Dhurata, in front of the court.
The Court of Appeal has sentenced Mezhin Picari to life imprisonment, while his daughter has been sentenced to only 4 years and six months in prison, as an accomplice in crime. But this decision is not accepted by the victim's family members.
Kundreti's granddaughter, Bora Elezaj, spoke to the media today, accusing the competent bodies of being corrupt in order to reduce Dhurata's sentence.
"It is very difficult to talk about this event. I take a cue from the previous post about this event. I want to make a public statement and an appeal to the competent authorities. The case has made a huge fuss for weeks. It's hard for me to remember the details once and for all.
We have been following the legal ordeal for the uncle for years. All this event that happened could have been prevented very quickly, but there was negligence. Before the incident, there were complaints from my uncle about threats. We had been receiving threats for a year and a half. We knew they had guns in the house, without a permit. We asked for an inspection, but it was not done. A total negligence. On the day of the incident, my uncle was under a protection order from Mejiti. But he was never accompanied by a policeman, not even when he appeared in court sessions. He himself was afraid that something might happen. There are messages, audios that we have sent to the police where the threats are verified. We expected this, but with the hope that it would be prevented.
I had sent a letter to the minister and received an invitation to go to the police. But in fact, they treated me with contempt, even telling me the words: 'Who are you to write to the minister, what do you think?'
Before the murder, my uncle has a video, which proves that Mejhiti intervened at the moment when the uncle was about to report the threats. In fact, Mejhiti attacked him before killing him, he shot him in the back.
We still don't understand after 2 and a half years why he had to be killed. There was talk of an honor crime, but a family that has a son in prison for child rape cannot talk about an honor crime. A family that has remained at the courthouse for rape, violence and now also for murder. I don't know what my uncle might have known about that family. I don't know any other reason. Uncle didn't want anything to do with his daughter, he let things go without reacting at all. He just wanted to take the children. This was also used as a pretext, allegedly my uncle did not allow them to meet the children. The children wrote to the psychologist that they did not want to see her. They have had no contact with their mother since she left home. They have videos of their mother, who cheated on her husband, this was the reason for their divorce.
We have doubts that something happened inside the doors of the court, I think there was interference, corruption, corruption of the Court that reduced the sentence drastically. He was sentenced to only 4 and a half years. I will follow this to the end. I didn't think I would go public, but apparently there are such extreme decisions.
The children are 10 and 14 years old, as one of them tragically died in an accident. I don't want anything to be known about them because they are children. They are fine now, they were hit by the loss of their brother, but they have recovered, " she said.
The serious event took place at noon on June 4, 2021 in a bar near the Civil Court, in Tirana, where 53-year-old Mejit Picari killed the 41-year-old ex-husband of the girl in the divorce process, Kudret Saliaj, in the middle of the bar, a few minutes before the court hearing. 5th. Kudret Saliaj was shot with 8 bullets by his father-in-law, while 5 bullets hit him in the body. The victim's lawyer, Adriatik Cama, remained injured and thankfully out of danger.
On the day of the incident, Mejit Picari was with his daughter Dhurata Salia in the same bar as the victim, a few chairs away. There was no verbal confrontation between Picari and Saliaj, but the killer simply approached him and shot him with a pistol. After committing the murder, Picari fled on foot between the buildings and was then arrested at his daughter's house in Yzberisht.
After the event, Picari threw the TT pistol into the Lana River, while the crime weapon was found after several hours of searching on the ground at the foot of the river and not in the water. In his testimony to the police, Mejit Picari said that he committed the murder for the girl's dignity, saying that he was unjustly accused of infidelity against his husband and physical and psychological violence against her 3 children.
Meanwhile, the custody of three minor children was taken in November 2022 by the brother of Kudret Saliaj. The decision was taken by the Tirana court, which accepted the lawsuit of the children's uncle, two boys and a girl, all minors. During the process, the children's uncle Kelmend Picari also raised claims for custody, which was opposed by the Saliaj family, but then he withdrew and did not officially file a lawsuit in court.
