The massive fire that engulfed the used clothing market in the "May 5" area of Tirana yesterday evening has left behind serious material consequences.
The flames started in one silo and quickly spread to others, due to the high intensity and easily combustible materials.
The situation was considered critical in the first hours, but thanks to the intervention of dozens of firefighting forces from Tirana, Kamza, Vora, Elbasan and the support of the Armed Forces, the fire was isolated and brought under control during the night.
Authorities confirm that no one was injured, while the material damage is considerable. According to a preliminary assessment by the Municipality of Tirana and traders, the losses are estimated at millions of euros.
The Deputy Mayor of Tirana, Anuela Ristani, announced last evening that the fire has been isolated and does not pose a danger to surrounding homes or businesses, although work to completely extinguish the flames has continued throughout the night, while large plumes of smoke continue to rise today.
She stressed that the spread of the fire was favored by the nature of the goods, mainly used clothing, which contain highly flammable materials.
It is suspected that the cause of the fire, according to preliminary information, is an electrical spark. However, according to authorities, it is still too early to reach a conclusion as a full investigation into the incident is awaited. All the shops have already been burned.
The fire started in a clothing store in the center of the warehouse and then spread to the surrounding stores, burning down the entire warehouse with about 100 stores. Inside were plastics and various industrial materials that have now been completely replaced, and the damage is estimated at one million euros.
