He won the "Nobel" for literature; who is Norwegian writer Jon Fosse

Jon Fosse, a master of restrained Nordic writing with a rich oeuvre from plays to novels to children's books, won the Nobel Prize in literature on Thursday "for his groundbreaking plays and prose that give voice to the unspeakable," he said. in the motivation of the Swedish Academy.

Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel committee for literature, said his work is rooted "in the language and nature of his Norwegian background".

"I was surprised when they called me, but at the same time I was expecting it. I have carefully prepared myself over the last 10 years that this could happen. I was very happy,"  64-year-old Fosse told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.

Fosse has written around 40 plays, as well as novels, short stories, children's books, poetry and essays. Mats Malm, permanent secretary of the Swedish Nobel Prize Academy, called the writer to communicate his selection as a winner.

Fosse is the fourth Norwegian writer to receive the highest literary prize. Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson received it in 1903, Knut Hamsun in 1920 and Sigrid Undset in 1928. His book "A New Name: Septology VI-VII" - described by Olsson as the writer's "opus magnum" (a magnum opus) Fosse – was a finalist for the Booker International Prize in 2022.

In a statement released by his publishing house, Samlaget, Fosse said he saw the award "as an appreciation for a literature that above all aims simply to be literature, without other considerations". Nobel Prizes carry a prize of 11 million Swedish kroner ($1 million). Winners also receive a gold medal and a diploma at the award ceremonies in December.

Last year, French writer Annie Ernaux won the prize for what the Swedish Academy described as "courage and clinical insight" in books inspired by life in a small town in the Normandy region of northwest France.

Ernaux was the 17th female writer among 119 Nobel laureates for literature. The literary prize has long faced criticism that it is too focused on European and North American writers, as well as being largely dominated by men.

In 2018, the award was postponed after the Academy was rocked by allegations of sexual abuse. This caused the resignation of many members of the Academy. The academy rebounded but faced criticism again when it honored Austrian writer Peter Handke in 2019, who had justified Serbian war crimes.
