Albanian composer Olsa Toqi scored international success with her newest opera, "Meladramma AI", which premiered on September 21 at the historic Regent Theatre in Oshawa, Canada.
The premiere was greeted with a standing ovation from the audience, marking a historic moment in the Canadian opera scene as the first work to fully integrate Artificial Intelligence, including real-time animations and interactive multimedia elements. The work was brought to the stage with the extraordinary performance of sopranos Lindsay McIntyre, Stephanie DeCiantis, Jonelles Sills and Reilly Nelson.
An innovative idea with scientific basis
The concept for the opera was born from a conversation between composer Olsa Toqi and Dr. Carolyn McGregor, dean of Ontario Tech University and NASA project collaborator. Struck by the thematic power of the work, Dr. McGregor suggested integrating AI, turning the project into a research and scientific initiative, as well as a creative platform for technology and IT students at Ontario Tech.
The opera presents a poetic inversion of the apple myth: humans bite into a robotic apple, while robots seek to become human by biting into the organic apple. Instead of dressing like Adam and Eve, they are stripped of all sin thanks to divine intervention.
After five pagan-themed arias, symbolizing the long dominance of paganism in human history, and a dramatic monologue by the Evil One, the work concludes with a triumphant "Hallelujah," where humans and robots bow together in a unifying act before God.
The premiere was attended by numerous dignitaries, including the Albanian Ambassador to Canada, Artemis Malo. The opera is scheduled to be performed soon in Toronto and other Canadian cities.
“Meladramma AI” follows other successes by composer Olsa Toqi. In 2019, the opera she composed had its world premiere at the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, Italy, one of the most prestigious opera houses in the region. The work was later presented in Albania, at the “Ringjallja e Kristi” Cathedral in Tirana and at the “Petro Marko” Theater in Vlora.
