14 days of protest, Rama unfazed: Hysteria! Only the Socialist Party will lead
Edi Rama

Despite the wave of protests that has continued for weeks and has produced a strong climate of political conflict, Prime Minister Edi Rama chose not to give any sign of retreat or change of course. In his appearance on the podcast "Flasim", he treated the protest as part of democratic normality, while emphasizing that the government will continue its projects without being stopped by the pressure of the street.

Rama's stance comes at a time when the 15th consecutive protest is expected to take place today. Organizers expect a massive turnout, while the main demand remains the resignation of the prime minister and holding political responsibilities for the issues that have prompted the public reaction. However, the statements of the head of government do not indicate any step towards political dialogue on these demands.

Instead, Rama insisted that Albania is at the most advanced stage of the European integration process and that the path towards EU membership will continue under the leadership of the Socialist Party. According to him, the protests will not affect the government's strategic objective of concluding negotiations and bringing the country closer to the EU.

Rama called for a distinction between criticism and what he described as a climate of hysteria, arguing that facts are being set aside in favor of narratives built on misinformation.

" 35 years of the Socialist Party, a long-planned celebration, which was crowned on June 12, at a special moment, because it is not simply a birthday and an anniversary, but it is a moment that finds Albania better than Albania has ever been in every aspect and this is thanks to the Socialist Party and its governments. While, on the other hand, it is also a moment of reflection and commitment, because Albania is better than it has ever been, but Albania still needs to become much better than it is. And only the Socialist Party can do this, only this great state-building power can do this, with all its difficulties and all its shortcomings. Ironically, this 35th anniversary or, more precisely, for a coincidence that is perhaps also an important sign to stop for a moment, to take a breath and to understand what we need to learn from this wave of protests that coincided with this 35th anniversary of debates and from this spirit, how to You could say that the tense, fortunately peaceful atmosphere that has occupied public space in recent days.

A spirit that is also fueled by the fact that, because of this initial subject, this issue that became an issue, that initiated the protest, of course as a result of a scandalous act, that was immediately condemned both legally and institutionally, lies the family of the president of the United States. And this makes all those who are opponents of the president of the United States interested in this protest, so that Albania becomes a platform where very large forces clash, the American opposition clashes with the president of America, the European opposition clashes with the president of America, other interests that want Albania to be repositioned differently clash and become a crossroads where, in fact, the initial opposition turns into something completely different. And Albania is flooded by an explosion of all the channels of misinformation, disinformation, half-truths that become ever bigger lies, hour after hour, and that in fact put facts in the corner and fantasy in the center.

Of course, protest is a symbol of a democratic country. Of course, it is the democratic health of the country that has a protest that arises and takes shape not around parties, not behind parties. Even though now the parties are all involved, throwing stones, some hiding their hands, while others, such as the scoundrels, are there.

But it is equally important that we do not lose the ability to distinguish between debate and hysteria, between criticism and slander, between passionate argument and bullying, threats, pressure, denigration of the other. Albania cannot move forward, paralyzed by fear of a big change, of a big project, of an investment that is the largest in the history of our country.

And, of course, we will move forward, listening to what we need to hear, learning from what those who disagree with us tell us, but continuing to build, to build Albania with the strength of the Socialist Party, which is the force that has taken reforms, has undertaken difficult reforms, has pushed forward processes that have often been opposed, but which today have radically changed both the situation and the position of Albania. And, for this, it is enough to turn our heads back, no more, but 10 years, and to see where we were in relation to the world, in relation to the economy, to the institutions, to everything. And, in fact, there is no stronger symbolism than the fact that this 35th anniversary found us at the most advanced point of our European path. "A few weeks ago we entered the final phase of membership negotiations, which is the phase of closing chapters, getting closer than ever to that historical and strategic objective that Albanians have pursued for decades and that we have our fixation on day by day, day by day, day by day," he said.
