Over 334 thousand citizens with the right to vote, material basis distributed
Five municipalities in the country will vote tomorrow for new mayors; a process that includes 334,539 voters in Vlora, Berat, Cërrik, Mat and Tepelena. Voting centers will open at 07:00 and close at 18:00, as stipulated in the Electoral Code for the October-November period. The Central Election Commission has completed the distribution of election materials, while ballot boxes were delivered this Saturday to all relevant CEAZs.
In Vlora, where there are 232 polling stations and 171,895 voters, the race is between Brunilda Mersini of the Socialist Party, Dionis Sota supported by the DP, and Gjergj Nika, an independent. In Berat, with 82,161 voters and 116 stations, the showdown is between the socialist Ervin Ceca and Pavlo Shkarpa. Mati has 29,092 voters who will vote in 47 stations, where Altin Bojni (SP), Suzana Pasha (independent, official of the SP) and Eduart Brahilika, supported by the opposition, are competing.
In Cërrik, 38,724 voters will choose between Florenc Doka (SP), Amarildo Hoxha (independent, supported by the DP) and Eligert Hima from the "Albania Becomes Movement". In Tepelena, where there are 12,667 citizens with the right to vote in 22 centers, the socialist Gramoz Sako and the independent Gabriel Guma will face off.
These by-elections come after the departure of five mayors who took government positions or parliamentary mandates; among them Andis Salla of Cerrik, who was appointed minister. The election campaign passed without much political protagonism and without rallies, while the major parties avoided direct involvement.
The Democratic Party does not have official candidates with its logo, but local structures have supported several independent candidates. This situation is expected to test the real influence of the SP on the ground and the ability of the opposition to gather votes outside the formal party scheme. But the elections also show the surrender of the DP, as it failed to field a candidate.
If Erion Veliaj had not gone to the Constitutional Court, we would have elections in Tirana today. But the plan of Edi Rama and Sali Berisha failed, as both wanted to politically eliminate Veliaj. However, the moment Florjan Binaj appeared on the scene, both regretted it. In the polls, Binaj was seen as "head to head" with Manastirliu and could win. But his victory was a big blow for both Edi Rama and Berisha. For Rama, the loss of the Tirana Municipality could bring about early elections. While for Berisha, Binaj's victory would mean that he is the reason that the DP does not win, since if he finds the right people he can defeat the SP. But with the annulment of the elections, both Rama and Berisha are very satisfied. /Pamphlet
