The Constitutional Court's decision to cancel the early elections in Tirana and leave Mayor Erion Veliaj in office has caused a wave of reactions on the political scene.
The show "Të Pashoj" tonight also focused on this development. Tonight's guests are Arlind Qori, leader of the Together Movement, and lawyer Marsid Gupi. Both commented on the Constitutional Court's decision, where Qori also declared himself a candidate for the Municipality of the Capital.
He expresses disappointment but not surrender, emphasizing that the political battlefield remains active and that preparations for the next elections, even in 2027, will continue. On the other hand, lawyer Marsid Gupi states that the decision was legally foreseeable.
-Were you upset by the Constitutional Court's decision?
Arlind Qori: No. Of course, for me and for the Together Movement it would be good if the elections in Tirana were held as soon as possible. However, the political battlefield is still interesting, that is, we have a lot to do even if there are no direct elections now in November or December. There will be one day, there will definitely be in 2027. So we will prepare better for the elections, but at the same time we will also carry out other political activities because Albania has even broader needs than Tirana, and my political action and that of the Together Movement will be plural.
-With me in the studio is also Marsid Gupi, lawyer and lecturer at the same time. Were you waiting for the decision of the Constitutional Court?
Marsid Gupi: I have also publicly stated that the decision to hold the elections would be overturned. Whether it is the government's position or the presidential decree, because the election date cannot be announced without exhausting all levels of appeal.
Legal logic, yes legal logic refuted the political argument, first. And the levels of the judiciary must always be exhausted, or so to speak, all the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and the law to one party, which in this case was the mayor, must be exhausted, because a principle always prevails, which is a good and important principle that is rarely heard to be talked about or arguments and premises are built, which is the presumption of innocence. Until the moment someone is declared guilty by a final decision, he is suspended, presumed innocent. And every other type of action or legal act is affected by this. Because in the Code of Criminal Procedure, the logic is that it is better for ten guilty people to be outside than one innocent person inside. So a person who does not deserve to be punished, but should be punished.
