How criminal groups from Albania are replacing Cosa Nostra and becoming key trafficking hubs in the Mediterranean...
The presence of Albanian criminal groups in eastern Sicily has long been the subject of discussion in the Italian media, mainly through the investigations of journalist Giuseppe Bascietto.
Recently, the Italian public television RAI, in the very popular morning show UnoMattina, gave this phenomenon greater reinforcement, after the editorial office had received several phone calls and messages from residents of the island of Sicily.
As it is learned, more than an editorial message, it is a signal conveyed to the Italian anti-mafia, which aimed to provide and communicate a broader understanding of the phenomenon, which the Albanian authorities have also informed about for a long time.
So far we are not at the stage of official communications by letter or requests for procedural actions, such as arrests or wiretapping decisions, but at the stage of recognizing and discussing the issue in a didactic and informative aspect.
In various seminars, Albanian and Italian police authorities are conducting a study of the phenomenon at a macro level, to then move on to a new phase, which includes tracking, interception, arrest and opening criminal files.
The problem with members of criminal gangs, namely mafias, is not their capture for everyday crimes, such as beatings, carrying weapons without a license or driving at high speed, while drunk or under the influence of narcotics.
This happens often and does not bring long-term results; on the contrary, it strengthens the criminal figures more, as their reputation in their circle increases, adding clients and collaborators.
The only way to damage these gangs, since their elimination never happens, is to seize evidence of cocaine trafficking, money laundering and the association of these activities with the use of firearms, hostage-taking, murder and blackmail, to finally arrive at evidence of a structured criminal group.
So far, however, an important phenomenon has been established: several well-known Albanian crime figures have dominant positions in a super-strategic area, not only for Italy, but for the entire Mediterranean.
The eastern part of Sicily includes four important centers, which are also the most developed areas of the island. In this region is Catania, the largest administrative and economic center, which once had one of the most powerful Cosa Nostra bases. In addition to Catania, part of the network are also Taormina, a super-tourist area, Ragusa, a powerful economic center, and Syracuse, the famous city of Pythagoras the Great.
Throughout human history, this part of Sicily, in addition to being a gathering of cultures, has been a key hub for world trade across the Mediterranean. It connects Greece, North Africa and the Middle East with the continental part of Europe, constituting one of the main trade arteries from East to West.
An ideal environment for trafficking, but also for covering criminal activities through legal and quality businesses, such as agritourism and agricultural products, as the Italian anti-mafia emphasizes.
But from which areas do the Albanian groups operating in Ragusa and Syracuse mainly come? According to the Italian authorities, most of them come from Fier and Mallakastra, areas that also have control and influence in Greece, mainly in Sparta, the Peloponnese and Attica, that is, Athens and Piraeus.
Investigations and research have revealed an inseparable connection of these groups with criminal activities in Greece and Albania, where it is estimated that large capitals obtained from illegal activities are invested, where cocaine trafficking plays the main part.
According to the assessment of the Italian authorities, the filling of the gap of Cosa Nostra in Sicily by Albanian groups has not come as a result of any extraordinary ability of the latter. This has happened because the Albanians have rented the criminal “business” that is practiced in this area.
In this scheme, the Albanians act as subcontractors of the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta, which has carried out negotiations with the Sicilian groups and has concluded that, if this “concession” were not rented, then someone else would occupy the most coveted place of trafficking and trade in the Mediterranean.
For this reason, the Italian authorities estimate, the Albanians who act as subcontractors seek to earn and invest very quickly. But the commission they pay to the ‘Ndrangheta and Cosa Nostra is high, so they are significantly increasing the volume of trade, which, according to forecasts, will also bring “side effects”: murders, eliminations, blackmail and constant violence.
For this reason, the authorities are afraid of a situation that could get out of control, since the Albanians, with their empowerment, will no longer retreat, even if a war breaks out, to which they usually do not easily say “no”.
The argument for preparing for armed clashes, according to experts, is related to the strong territorial control in the Catania area, where the mafia “soldiers” operate, which, also due to demographics, can today be considered a basin dominated by Albanians./ Pamphlet
