"We cannot solve the world's problems alone. We need to work with other countries" , this is the doctrine chosen to be represented by the veteran of foreign policy in the United States, ardent supporter of transatlantic alliances, Antony Blinken.
He built his career on the aggressive approach to intervene in the defense of freedoms and democracies around the world. A career diplomat without the pomp, ambition or global profile of his successors, at the head of the state department Blinken had to manage some of the most serious crises of our time; often surpassing in prudence the boss in the White House, but never eclipsing him.
For this, they have baptized him as Joe Biden's ideal assistant, also due to the fact that the cooperation between them has deep roots, since Blinken served first as a security adviser in the Obama administration and then as assistant secretary of state. Although with almost the same vision, Blinken clashed with his boss when he supported the military intervention in Libya.
After taking office, Blinken was immediately thrust into the spotlight with the United States' chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in the summer of 2021. Amid a firestorm of criticism targeting the White House, he acknowledged that more should have been done by the Department of the State to prevent the scenario of the Taliban coming to power.
After the troubled withdrawal from Afghanistan, Blinken worked to revitalize the United States' relations with the EU, China and a number of other regions, including the Western Balkans. He tried to persuade China to desist from aggressive acts in the South China Sea and elsewhere, while he lobbied on the need to keep communication channels open between Washington and Beijing. But the most decisive moments on the world stage came after the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
The State Department, headed by him, authorized the shipment of weapons and aid to Ukraine after the Russian attack in early 2022. A proponent of flying diplomacy, and physical talks as the key to a solution, he has traveled to the war-torn country several times. He carried forward the same doctrine in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, where he is trying to mediate peace through numerous trips and meetings with Arab leaders in the region.
Despite criticism of the American approach, in defense of the Israeli campaign against Hamas, it has repeatedly called for humanitarian pauses to enable the entry of aid and the protection of civilian lives. As head of American diplomacy, he is committed to maintaining stability in the Western Balkans; with special focus on preventing the return of conflicts in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. Under his leadership, American diplomacy has taken a key role in mediating tensions between Kosovo and Serbia, but leaving the reins of dialogue to the European Union. Constant promoter of the solution through dialogue, he made the strongest and most direct comments towards Kosovo after the violent protests in Zveçan, where KFOR soldiers were injured. At that time, he condemned what he called Kosovo's unilateral actions, something that prompted a response from Prime Minister Kurti. The latter described Blinken's comments as naive and unfair. Under his leadership, the State Department advanced the strong agenda for the protection of democracies around the world, expanding the list of entities or individuals sanctioned in the Western Balkans, for malicious activities and corruption./ A2CNN
