Socialist MP and former Minister of Justice, Etilda Gjonaj, during her speech at today's parliamentary session, expressed regret over the arrest of Mayor Veliaj.
She said that Veliaj has been wronged, as she spoke about all the work he has done for Tirana.
"I feel great regret that Erion Veliaj and his family find themselves in this situation today. On the one hand, with the mud on his face unjustly given, on the other hand, the battle that must be fought for justice for his truth.
Leaving the Municipality of Tirana without a mayor, on the eve of the elections, is unfair. The security measure should not be disproportionate to the public good. I am not happy for anyone to be arrested, but the time has come to build a healthy policy first.
We remember the work he did for a better Tirana, for a Tirana with a much more developed infrastructure in terms of cleanliness, development, with many cultural, sports, social activities, with more services for those who need it most. I do not see any hesitation in what we have done to give the country a new justice system, just as there is no hesitation in continuing the fight against corruption. And today, justice institutions have quite a few problems, international reports have also said so. Justice is the main pillar of a state, but it must be in respect of the rights of the individual ," said Gjonaj.
