The Constitutional Court refused to comment on President Bajram Begaj's decision to decree November 9th as the date for the Tirana municipal elections.
Euronews Albania journalist Enkelejda Mema asked the Constitutional Court what their position was regarding the constitutionality of the president's decision, "as long as an appeal has been filed with the Constitutional Court by the defense of former Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj and according to Article 115 of the constitution, any decision-making is suspended."
" We have no comment on the matter ," was the Constitutional Court's response.
The Presidency explained through a press release the motivation for the decree announcing early elections for mayor of Tirana, despite the fact that former mayor Erion Veliaj had appealed his dismissal to the Constitutional Court.
Meanwhile, unlike the Constitutional Court, the CEC seems to have accepted the decree and has given signals that work on holding the elections will begin. Through a post on Facebook, Ilirian Celibashi has published the President's decree.
" Decree of the President of the Republic setting the date of November 9, 2025 for the holding of partial elections for mayors of Tirana, Vlora, Berat, Mat, Cërrik and Tepelena ," writes Celibashi.
