The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has published a message on social networks on the occasion of Europe Day, symbolically linking this anniversary with the necessity of political change in Albania.
Berisha emphasizes that May 9, Europe Day and the 75th anniversary of the "Schuman Declaration", should not be for Albanians simply a commemoration, but an omen of a return to the path of European integration, a path that, according to him, has been abandoned for 12 years by the current majority.
"Albanians are among the peoples who have more strongly than anyone else linked their dreams to Europe. And yet, even today we remain outside its doors," Berisha writes. He emphasizes that the Democratic Party has been the force that paved the way for EU membership, with concrete achievements such as visa liberalization and application for candidate status.
Berisha further accuses the Rama government of having slowed down and hindered the integration process, citing as an example the Dutch parliament's motion for the reinstatement of visas and the deterioration of the country's image in the international arena.
According to Berisha, the only step reported as progress – the opening of negotiations for EU chapters – was not the merit of the Albanian government, but the result of Brussels' change in approach to candidate countries.
"There is no place in the EU for a narco-dictatorship. Albanians did not turn to Europe to export crime," Berisha writes, promising that after May 11, the DP will restore trust and advance the European project.
In the end, he reminds citizens that “European Albania” is a commitment that must be fulfilled – a country where teachers and doctors are paid decently, young people study to Western standards, and the economy develops in partnership with Europe, not in the shadow of crime.
"After May 11, Albania will be what was promised: a magnificent Albania, a dignified part of the European family," Berisha emphasizes.

Dear friends, today is May 9, the day when Europe celebrates peace and unity, a date that marks the anniversary of the "Schuman Declaration", the historic proposal made by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in 1950, which laid the foundations of European cooperation.
For the European Union, this May 9th has the distinction of being the 75th anniversary of the visionary ideas of its founding; for us Albanians, it cannot be less than an omen of the knock of change 48 hours before our country regains control of what for 12 years was dusty, the European journey.
Vështirë se gjendet komb i dytë ende jashtë dyerve të familjes evropiane që ka lidhur ëndrrat e tij me Evropën e bashkuar më shumë se Shqipëria dhe shqiptarët. Dalë thuajse nga paradhoma e vdekjes shoqërore të diktaturës më të egër në gjirin e kontinentit, shqiptarët e deshën Shqipërinë si gjithë Evropa kur për Evropën dinin veç në letra, veç në dëshira, fshehtazi e nën frikë.
Partia Demokratike pati guximin dhe fatin historik t’i printe vendit qysh në fillesat e shtetit të parë demokratik shqiptar, fillimisht me reforma e më pas me institucionalizimin e hapave për anëtarësimin e saj. Kurrë një forcë politike e dytë nuk ka të lënë si gjurmë të pamohueshme në trashëgiminë e saj hapa e arritje drejt anëtarësimit të Shqipërisë në BE më shumë se Partia Demokratike. Nën udhëheqjen e saj, shqiptarët shpresuan, besuan dhe përjetuan marrëveshjen simbol të rrugës së anëtarësimit, lëvizjen e lirë dhe pa viza n Evropë dhe zonën Schengen, reforma të thella ekonomike, ligjore, politike për përafrimin me standardet evropiane, deri në aplikimin për marrjen e statusit kandidat, status të cilin shqiptarët e gëzuan pak pasi demokratët lanë pushtetin.
Por, si një perde e hekurt që ndan dy kohë, ardhja në pushtet e Rilindjes ngriu çdo hap, çdo progres, çdo zhvillim të mëtejshëm të procesit të integrimit. Shqipëria që kërkoi për vite me radhë të ulej denjësisht si e barabartë në tryezat e BE-së, u tjetërsua në arenën evropiane në imazh, status dhe prestigj. Vendi ynë u njoh në këto 12 vite jo më shumë se sa për cirkun trasgresiv të kryeministrit pa asnjë përgjegjësi për kombin që udhëhiqte, pa ndjerë më të voglën përgjegjësi shtetërore kur në vitin 2019, dhoma e dytë e përfaqësuesve në parlamentin e Hollandës votoi në shumicë pro mocionit për të rikthyer vizat për qytetarët e Shqipërisë pas shqetësimeve të aktiviteteve kriminale, apo kur në vitin 2021, Ministria e Jashtme e Hollandës, me anë të Përfaqësuesit të saj të përhershëm në BE, i kërkoi Komisionit Europian rikthimin e regjimit të vizave për Shqipërinë. i vetmi lajm nga BE gjatë tri mandateve të qeverisjes, i ofruar si progres në ecurinë e procesit të antarësimit në BE ishte hapja e negociatave për 33 kapitujt e acquis. E vërteta është se ky hap erdhi në fakt si rezultat i reformimit të procesit të anëtarësimit për vendet kandidate për në BE dhe asesi si shpërblim për një shtet që çdo vit rrokulliset në indekset ndërkombëtare të demokracisë dhe lirisë.
Pjesë e BE-së nuk mund të jetë kurrë një narkodiktaturë, Shqipëria nuk iu ofrua Bashkimit Evropian si e tillë, shqiptarët nuk iu ofruan Evropës si qytetarë të një vendi që mbjell krim.
Therefore, this 75th anniversary of the EU, my friends, will be remembered also for us Albanians as the year when the path towards the EU was taken back into the hands of the democrats, to fulfill their commitment, a European Albania that deserves to be part of the European Union as such. Promises are kept, commitments are fulfilled, dreams are carried to the end. European Albania will be that of the homeland of Albanians, of teachers and doctors who are paid no less than their colleagues in the West, of young men and women who study with the standards of their peers, of Albanian and foreign investors, the one that exchanges economy and not crime with other European countries.
This will be the Albania after May 11, the magnificent Albania, worthy of being part of the great European family.
