The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, participated this Sunday in the flag raising ceremony in Durrës, in commemoration of November 26, 1912.
The Head of State appreciated the role of the citizens of Durrës, who at that time stood by the patriots for the future of independent Albania and, also, their vision today for the transformation of the city.
"Durres is the first city of our Renaissance, where 111 years ago, on November 26, the flag of the glorious Kastriot was proudly raised, a sacred act and a reminder of the most precious values, just like blood and language, just like the countless battles and sacrifices that have been made on this land and for this land", emphasized the President.
President Begaj, during his speech at this ceremony, expressed gratitude for the sacrifices that the people of Durrës have always made for the good of the country and the wisdom they have shown, overcoming any division for the national interest:
"We will always be grateful to the citizens of the Durrës region, brave patriots in the challenging efforts to open Albanian schools and preserve the language, activists of the national issue with their commitment as part of the nationwide movement for freedom and independence.
In a time of political, administrative and social chaos, as well as the lack of clarity about the future, the people of Durrës, with prudence and ingenuity, became the forerunners of the most important event for the nation, which would take place only two days later in Vlora" , said the President.
During the visit to Durrës for the flag celebration, President Begaj met with citizens and local governing authorities. He also attended a painting exhibition for the November holidays and visited the archaeological sites of Durrës.
