Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke today in Prague, at "GLOBSEC 2024", with the topic chosen by moderator Steve Clemons, "Region under siege: The fragility of the Western Balkans".
The interview started with a joke from the moderator about the Prime Minister's sneakers. "I told him I am very jealous of the shoes because I walked from one stage to another today with these uncomfortable shoes", he said, while Rama replied: "they are cheap, you can buy them too".
During his speech, Rama said that after the war in Ukraine, the European Union has understood even more the importance of the Western Balkans.
"First of all, I congratulate Putin, because thanks to him, the EU realized how important it was to have the Western Balkans close by. It was unfortunate, we needed Vladimir to make that clear. Before the invasion of Ukraine, there were people who said that NATO does not need to exist anymore. There were many people in the union who did not believe at all in what they repeated as a motto that the Western Balkans should be in the EU, doing the same as the communists once upon a time who told us that our country is in the earthly paradise. Reality hit hard, the war in Ukraine completely shook the status quo. The EU started to become aware of how important the Western Balkans is. "Von der Leyen played an essential role, from the first day he tried to convey the message, but he also needed help from Putin," said Rama.
