The crazy race of electoral promises
Edi Rama and Sali Berisha /

Berisha and Rama promise billions of euros that Albania does not have; experts warn that the promises are impossible and only for electoral effects...

During this electoral campaign, Prime Minister Edi Rama has revealed a series of inflated and manipulated figures, claiming that Albania has the lowest prices in the region, doubled pensions and salaries, as well as a reduction in poverty and an increase in jobs. In fact, the average pension is only 183 euros and not 300 euros as Rama claims. Prices in Albania are 2-3 times higher compared to the region and EU countries, social assistance is 4 times lower than in neighboring countries, while the 300 thousand jobs claimed are actually only the formalization of existing jobs in the informal economy.
Faced with these deceptions, former Prime Minister Sali Berisha has returned with the same promises as in 2005, which were not fulfilled even then. His current promises are being perceived as empty repetition for electoral purposes, without any real economic basis.
Economic experts, based on the World Bank and IMF analyses for the years 2025-2030, claim that these promises are simply unattainable. The Albanian economy, burdened by tax evasion, corruption, business closures and the emigration of large companies abroad, cannot afford this level of spending.
Berisha promises a minimum wage of 500 euros and an average wage of 1,200 euros, while the current minimum wage is only 400 euros after 11 years of socialist governance. He also promises a living wage of 200 euros per month, a minimum pension of 200 euros and an average pension of 400 euros, with an annual increase of 20%. To fulfill these promises alone, over 3.5 billion euros are needed per year.
Sali Berisha also promises a 20% refund of food for pensioners, reductions in water and energy tariffs, the abolition of taxes for new businesses for 3 years, and large subsidies for families and farmers. All these measures would bring the annual budget to a total of 16 billion euros, while the current budget is only 8.2 billion euros.
Ironically, the wealthy like Rama and Berisha who are making these populist promises should try to live at least a month on a minimum pension of 100 euros, or with the 200 euro pension they promise to realize in four years./ Pamphlet
