White or black smoke? The Vatican closes its doors, the world awaits the new

The conclave began with the sacred rite and the oath of secrecy; 133 cardinals will decide the fate of the Catholic Church and its influence on the global order...

With the death of Pope Francis, the Holy See has entered one of the most decisive moments in its modern history. Today, in the Vatican, the conclave that will determine the next leader of the world's more than 1.3 billion Catholics officially began.

The process began at 10:00 a.m. with the special mass "Pro Eligendo Romano Pontifice" held in St. Peter's Basilica, led by Cardinal Giovanni Re. His homily was addressed not only to the clergy, but to the entire Catholic world, articulating the new challenges that the Church must face in the post-Francis era.

After a break for reflection and lunch, the 133 cardinals headed out of the Sistine Chapel at 4:30 p.m., following the solemn ritual and swearing to maintain the absolute secrecy of the electoral process. The culminating moment was the closing of the doors with the traditional formula "Extra Omnes" - everyone else out.

Now everything depends on the smoke that will come out of the chapel chimney. White smoke means: Habemus Papam – we have a Pope! Black smoke means: not yet.

The 2025 conclave is characterized by deep polarization within the College of Cardinals. One side seeks the continuation of Pope Francis' path of reform and openness, the other seeks a return to traditional conservatism.

The names most frequently mentioned are: Cardinal Pietro Parolin (Italy), Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines), Matteo Zuppi (Italy), Peter Erdő (Hungary), Jean-Marc Aveline (France), Fridolin Ambongo (Congo) and Robert Prevost (USA). All with different profiles, they also represent different ideological and geographical orientations.

The election of a new Pope will not only affect the Catholic world, but also global politics. The Holy See is an actor that influences issues such as peace, migration, climate change and dialogue between civilizations. A Pope from Latin America or Africa would signal a continuation of ecclesiastical universalism. A European Pope could represent a balance between tradition and modernity.

The world awaits. White or black smoke? The choice of the new Pope is not only a religious matter, but also a signal of the spiritual-political direction that will take one of the oldest and most influential institutions of the modern world./ Pamphlet
