NATO Senior General Rob Bauer, at the same time Chairman of the Military Committee of the Alliance, in an interview with the Montenegrin media, stated that the political leaders of the Balkans should be responsible for their countries and that it is up to them to play a role Important.
According to Bauer, leaders should keep the Balkans stable and secure and not wait for NATO and the EU to do something for them.
'I see fragile stability. The EU together with NATO is working on the things it is working on, but we are not the only ones who have to do something here. Even in the lands here there is a lot of work. All political leaders must be responsible for their countries. It is not enough to "sit back" and wait for the EU and NATO to do something about the Balkans. The countries themselves and the leaders in these countries play an important role in keeping the Balkans stable and secure.
NATO and the EU will help as we have done for years and will continue to do so in the future. NATO, in response to what happened in September in Kosovo, increased the number of soldiers in KFOR, and this is because we are observing what is happening on the ground.
And again, I disagree with what you said, and this is important to clarify that the picture is not that we are only looking at Ukraine. We look at the world around us and look at every change, be it in the Balkans, on the eastern borders, in the Indo-Pacific. We look wherever necessary and it's our job to be safe .' , he declared, reports Portalanalitika.me.
Bauer said that NATO does not pose a threat to Russia, but what the latter is doing in Ukraine has to do with "fear of democracy" and to separate this country from Euro-Atlantic integration.
Asked if NATO is prepared for an eventual attack from Russia, Admiral Bauer said "we need to know what kind of capability they need".
"Time is no longer on our side. If you get attacked, you don't have time. You must be ready. And that's why we need more soldiers on high alert. We need more skills. We need more supplies. We need more logistics. We need more and better exercises for the plans we have made," said Bauer.
Bauer also spoke about the statements of American President Joe Biden, that "if Russia wins in Ukraine, what do you think will happen to the Balkans".
"If Russia wins the war in Ukraine, this is not the end of hostilities. If they win the war in Ukraine, it might give them an idea that they can get more. And it is not only the Balkans, there are also other nations where they would see their interest. This is why NATO must prepare to defend itself better. I think that the way we work together with the EU in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo is an example for the future. And these are not NATO countries, but with the help of the EU and NATO, they have stabilized in recent years," he said.
Bauer stressed that there is fragile stability in the Balkans, therefore the EU together with NATO is working in this direction.
"NATO and the EU will help as we have done for years and we will continue to do so in the future. NATO, in response to what happened in September in Kosovo, increased the number of soldiers in KFOR, and this is because we are observing what is happening on the ground", said Admiral Bauer.
He has warned the increase in the number of KFOR forces in Kosovo if such a thing will be necessary.
"Now it is being discussed whether the number of forces in KFOR is sufficient and if it is necessary, then we will discuss the numbers and if we need to increase them, we will discuss and after the decision we will do it. So, it's all part of what we do on a daily basis", he said./ Pamphlet
