Removal of the Serbian dinar, QUINT requests the suspension of the decision of

The ambassadors of the QUINT countries have requested that Kosovo suspend the implementation of the regulation of the Central Bank of Kosovo, which foresees that the only currency in Kosovo for payments is the euro.

Through a joint statement, QUINT ambassadors said that the suspension of the decision should be made to "allow for a sufficient period of transition and for clear and effective public communication".

" The issue should be discussed further within the dialogue facilitated by the European Union" , the statement said.

QUINT ambassadors said the CBK regulation on cash operations, expected to come into effect on February 1, aims to reduce counterfeit money and maintain financial stability, but also "raises concerns about impact in particular on Serbian majority communities".

"We are concerned about the impact of the regulation on schools and hospitals in particular, for which no alternative process appears viable at the moment. The regulation will also have a direct impact on the daily lives of the vast majority of Kosovo Serbs who receive payments/financial assistance from Serbia," the QUINT ambassadors said in a statement.

QUINT includes the United States, France, Germany, Italy and Britain. The representatives of these countries met on January 26 with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, to discuss this issue.

Kurti, according to the announcement, during this meeting had asked the QUINT ambassadors to respect the CBK's decision.

"In the meeting, Prime Minister Kurti emphasized the importance of respecting constitutionality and legality in the country by everyone and at the same time respecting independent authorities, in this case the Central Bank" , it was said in the announcement of Kurti's Office.

Days ago, Washington also demanded that Kosovo reconsider the decision, which would prevent Serbs living in Kosovo from using the Serbian dinar to make dinar transactions. Radio Free Europe contacted the governor of CBK, Ahmet Ismaili, regarding the US request, but did not receive any response.

The European Union, meanwhile, has said that it has sought clarification from Kosovo about this decision.

In Kosovo, in all Serbian-majority settlements, the population uses the Serbian dinar to make payments, and those who work in Serbian institutions in Kosovo also receive their salaries in dinars.

Pensions are also paid with dinars, according to the Serbian system, as well as child allowances and social benefits.

In commercial establishments, in areas where Serbs live in Kosovo, in addition to the euro, the dinar is also used.

Lista Serbe, the main party of Serbs in Kosovo, which has the support of official Belgrade, has come out against this decision of the CBK, which would make it impossible to use the dinar. According to this subject, the CBK's decision endangers the survival of Serbs in Kosovo. /REL
