Prime Minister Edi Rama continues to be in the focus of international media. Recently, the prestigious German broadcaster Deutsche Welle has dedicated a report to the political situation in Albania, covering the opposition protest in Tirana and recalling the corruption allegations that weigh on the government.
German media emphasize that the Socialist Party has been ruling the country since 2013, but is currently facing political scandals. At the center of the reporting is the protest organized by the Democratic Party, where thousands of citizens demanded Rama's resignation. According to Deutsche Welle, the protest was accompanied by incidents, where Molotov cocktails were thrown, 16 police officers were injured and 13 people were arrested.
“ Prime Minister Edi Rama and his Socialist Party (SP) have governed Albania since 2013. However, a major corruption scandal now threatens the government. Albania’s Deputy Prime Minister, Belinda Balluku, is accused of favoring certain companies when awarding public contracts and of embezzling public funds. Balluku denies the charges.
At a rally organized by the opposition Democratic Party on Tuesday, thousands of people demanded Rama's resignation. Molotov cocktails were thrown; at least 16 police officers were injured and 13 people were arrested.
Albania has been an EU candidate country since 2014. Corruption is seen as one of the biggest obstacles on its path to EU integration. Albania was ranked 91st out of 182 countries in Transparency International's 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index , DW writes.
