Power consolidation and attacks on rivals, accusations from the US: Rama in line with Erdogan
Albania continues to be blackened by international media. As Rama has embarked on a collision course with justice and figures show that corruption is on the rise, foreign media are not spared either.
The Washington Examiner has written an article on the situation in the country, stating that Rama is using the judiciary to target opponents inside and outside the party. According to the article, the most obvious examples are Veliaj and Ahmetaj.
“ SPAK was intended to reduce political corruption, but it has become a tool in the hands of the corrupt. Rama has used this structure to selectively target political opponents, facing them in court, imprisonment or forcing them to leave the country on unfounded charges. Among those affected are Berisha, former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj and Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, ” the article states.
According to the article, what unites the names above is the fact that they have challenged Rama's consolidation of power, opposed the expansion of the drug economy, or exposed shady schemes. According to the article, Ahmetaj, for example, was accused of corruption for a contract in which he had no role and from which he did not benefit.
The author further states that Rama openly follows the model of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who transformed initial electoral victories into a consolidated system of power and used his position to become a billionaire several times over.
“ A person present at one of their meetings said that Erdoğan advised Rama that winning a third election was crucial, as then power becomes impossible to lose and consolidated control over the government could weaken the opposition and destroy civil society. Ekrem İmamoğlu, the popular mayor of Istanbul, whom Erdoğan imprisoned on false corruption charges to avoid facing a free election, recently sent Veliaj a letter of solidarity, while Rama is pursuing the same strategy. Rama’s use of SPAK mirrors Erdoğan’s audits and imprisonment of opponents ,” the article emphasizes.
