Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi have denied the accusations brought against them, describing them as politically motivated.
The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime has set June 5, 2026, at 11:00, for the next hearing against former President Ilir Meta and his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi.
In the session held on May 11, the GJKKO decided to separate the "Meta" file, determining that Meta and Kryemadhi will face each other in a separate trial, where they are accused of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets.
Meanwhile, the court accepted the request for a summary trial for three other defendants involved in the same case: Ema Çoku, the mother of Monika Kryemadhi, a friend of hers accused of money laundering, as well as the former head of AKEP, Pirro Xhixho, accused of corruption.
Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi have denied the accusations brought against them, describing them as politically motivated.
We recall that the court hearing against former President Ilir Meta and his ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi at the GJKKO was accompanied by debates, requests for live broadcast and strong accusations against SPAK, while prosecutors presented evidence about the CEZ-DIA file, lobbying in the US and relations with businessman Adrian Shatku.
Meta appeared again in the glass cage in the courtroom, communicating with difficulty with lawyer Kujtim Cakrani, who approached him through a small gap in the glass to talk to him. The former president greeted supporters and journalists with the symbol of the double-headed eagle, while at one point he addressed former MP Bujar Leskaj with the words: “Acoustics, acoustics… glass.”
Monika Kryemadhi, who had no contact with Meta during the hearing, was also in the courtroom. Meanwhile, her mother and the other defendant, Pirro Xhixho, were represented only by lawyers.
One of the main debates was related to the request of the defense and the media for live broadcast of the trial. Lawyer Kujtim Cakrani insisted that this was the “trial of the year” and that there was no legal basis for banning cameras. Judge Etleva Deda argued that the broadcast would create public and media pressure, ordering the cameras to be removed from the courtroom.
Monika Kryemadhi also called for a trial open to the public, stating that “Albanians should see the evidence,” while comparing the treatment of defendants in Albania to the American justice system. Cakrani also criticized Meta’s detention in a glass cage, calling it a violation of human dignity.
During the hearing, SPAK prosecutors presented evidence that they believe links Meta and Kryemadhi to the CEZ-DIA affair, lobbying in the US and corrupt relations with businessman Adrian Shatku. SPAK alleged that Monika Kryemadhi used around $234,000 from Shatku's bank cards, while the couple's total benefits from this relationship amounted to around $526,000.
Meta denied the accusations, stating that he is divorced from Kryemadhi and that criminal responsibility is individual. "Show me an expense that I have made," he told the courtroom, adding that he has also had the watch he wears for 20 years.
After the hearing, Meta reacted on social media, claiming that SPAK has dropped the main charge against him for lobbying for $1 million for a photo with Donald Trump, while promising that "the other charges will also be dismantled one after the other."
Meanwhile, Monika Kryemadhi declared that the trial against her and Meta is political, while mocking the conditions in the new courtroom by saying that “the air conditioner started to leak.” She added that Meta is in “top form” and claimed that last week the former president was mistakenly sent a larger suit, which created the impression of a physical decline.
The GJKKO decided to divide the file and accept a summary trial for the other three defendants: Ema Çoku, a friend of Kryemadhi, and former AKEP leader Pirro Xhixho. The next hearing for Meta and Kryemadhi will be held on June 5.
Former spouses Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi will be tried in a trial, accused of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets. The Special Court separately separated the other three defendants with a summary trial.
