The Supreme Court leaves Erion Veliaj in prison, rejects the appeal of the mayor

The High Court has upheld the security measure of 'prison arrest' against the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, after the hearing held today.

The High Court upheld the GJKKO Appeals decision, rejecting the appeal of Veliaj, who is in Durrës detention as a suspect for corruption, money laundering, concealment of assets and illegal entry of items into prison premises.

The Special Prosecution Office had addressed the High Court with a request and, among other things, with arguments as to why Mayor Veliaj should be investigated under the current security measure.

The Supreme Court has decided: “Enforcing decision no. 13 (87-2025-85), dated 13.03.2025, of the Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime ”.

The Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime on March 3 of this year also upheld the first instance decision. Meanwhile, today the third judicial link confirmed the decision of the First Instance and the Appeal as correct.

We recall that Veliaj has been in prison since February 10 and is accused by SPAK, together with his wife, Ajola Xoxa, of building a corruption and money laundering scheme to illegally benefit from the capital's municipality funds and bribes from its businessmen contractors, using a network of companies and non-profit organizations.

According to SPAK, the mayor of the capital and his wife have benefited from this corrupt scheme to the tune of around 1 million euros.
In addition to the mayor and his wife, the GJKKO has imposed a "house arrest" measure on businessman Elman Abule and a "compulsory appearance" measure on five other businessmen, including Gentian Sula, Shkëlqim Fusha and Fatmir Bektashi, whose companies are beneficiaries of municipal funds or construction permits in Tirana.
