Former Democratic Party MP Ervin Salianji was released today from Fier prison, where he was serving his sentence for the case known as "Babale", after the Fier Court accepted his request for conditional release.
Salianji was released on parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence, as permitted by Albanian law. His request for early release was filed with the Fier Court on May 29, 2025, and after several delays due to the lack of documentation from the Fier prison, the court approved his request based on a positive behavioral assessment report from the Institution for the Execution of Criminal Decisions (IEVP) Fier.
The decision to release was finalized after the submission of the Probation Service report, required by July 8, 2025.
According to his lawyer, Ledio Braho, Salianji had exemplary behavior while serving his sentence, which supported his conditional release three months before the full term of his sentence.
We recall that Salianji was convicted of the criminal offense of "false reporting" in connection with an audio recording published in 2018, which alleged that the brother of former Interior Minister Fatmir Xhafaj, Agron Xhafaj, was involved in drug trafficking.
The Court of First Instance in Tirana, on December 18, 2019, found him guilty of "false reporting" and sentenced him to 1 year in prison. Salianji appealed the decision to the Court of Appeal.
Salianji was initially sentenced on December 18, 2019 by the Court of First Instance to 1 year in prison. The decision was confirmed by the Court of Appeal on September 26, 2024, and he surrendered to the police that same day, starting to serve his sentence in Fier prison on September 27, 2024.
The Supreme Court, on October 15, 2024, rejected his request for suspension of sentence, forcing him to serve the full sentence, despite claims by Salijanj and the opposition that the sentence was political and orchestrated by Prime Minister Rama and former Minister Xhafaj.
