Fatmir Mediu

The former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, after today's court session on the Gërdeci case, requested the declassification of the materials of the meeting of the National Security Council that took place after the Gërdeci tragedy.

According to Mediu, in this meeting, the heads of the country's Intelligence have expressed concerns that there could be interventions to create situations that would hinder Albania's membership in NATO.

Mediu claims that the head of the alliance's Directorate of Security and Intelligence also expressed such a concern in Brussels.

"There was a meeting of the National Security Council. There were positions of the leaders of the information services, who did not rule out the possibility of intervention to create a situation before Albania's membership in NATO took place. I was in Brussels, in the Directorate of Security and Intelligence of NATO with the director of SHIU and we were given a warning to be careful about extraordinary events before receiving the invitation for membership. Developments in the region have shown that there has been interference and intentions to prevent the membership of the Balkan countries in NATO. Also, the data are specifically and by name in the meeting of the National Security Council, which I am not declassifying today. I know that it has been requested by all those who have been sentenced that an experiment be made in relation to the reason why the tragedy happened. I want to remind you that the son of the deceased Deliu has stated that he was at home from 10:00 to 12:00 and his father did not weld any cart during those two hours. And we are talking about a situation where it is claimed according to American expertise that after two minutes there is no welding effect on gunpowder combustion. So it is in the interest of Albania to make a full assessment of the situation, not in the interest of Fatmir Mediu," said Mediu.
