"You are 70 years behind"/ Rama challenges the EBRD: Within 5 years or
Edi Rama

Today, in a joint conference with the Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania will join the EU in 5 years or a little more.

Meanwhile, according to the EBRD report, Albania will need up to 70 years to reach EU living standards.

What has to do with the substance, not the procedure, we continue to work with the commission every day. In our view it is important as we are doing the work. We will continue to do this. We have launched and are very pleased with the AI model for translation, which is very convincing. This will save us a lot of time. When the process enters the next phase, we will be very advanced. In terms of growth, there are clear indicators. Mostly the rule of law, we have moved forward as far as the rule of law is concerned. This gave us a lot of advantage. Remember we were blocked and the commission has fought a lot with member states to start negotiations, we lost time. As the control process shows, we have been working in the meantime. We have worked, we are not at the final moment. Membership will come hopefully in 5 or so years. And then we can worry that someone is bothering us. It is important for us to make it work here,' said Rama.

Rama also emphasized that the new Growth Plan is a key platform to accelerate the entry of the Western Balkan countries into the EU.

To illustrate this, Rama referred to the remittances and exactly the remittances from the immigrants to their families in Albania and the other 5 countries, saying that by calculating the costs of the transactions, half a billion euros will be saved.

"All of us in the Western Balkans agree that the EU is not just doing business as usual but is going a step further to join us, to help us grow and integrate with a new growth plan that it is actually the result of our encouragement to be heard and understood, as far as our arguments and ideas are concerned. Thanks to this exchange of views, we have achieved this very important objective, to introduce into the traditional process something new, which is quite concrete and which can take us to another level much faster.

I brought the example of the cost of financial transactions. In Albania, but also in all the countries of the region, we have many people who live abroad, and continue to help their families at home. For every money they send it is 6 times higher than the transaction cost between EU members. The increase plan will bring this cost to the same level as the member states. With this alone, we save half a billion euros, straight from the pockets of our citizens and our businesses. This is just one of the benefits from the growth plan, which gives us the opportunity to have the same conditions and processes as EU countries," said Rama.
