Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku said that the reconstruction program turned into a gold mine for the government, while the affected families were left hostage to unfulfilled promises.
After 6 years since the earthquake tragedy, Tabaku emphasized that what was supposed to be a period of shared recovery, unfortunately turned into an opportunity for abuse for the socialist government.
"While the international community mobilized with grants and soft loans, the government promised quick solutions and reconstruction within a few years. Today, the balance is shocking: inflated costs of over 1.3 billion euros and thousands of families still without a completed home," said Tabaku.
According to her, the government chose to break the basic rule of public finances: it jumped into tenders without funds in the budget, hiding real costs and artificially increasing them day after day.
"The result was absurd: a school built with EU funds cost around 600 thousand euros, while the same school, built with the state budget, cost 2.2 million euros according to the Municipality of Tirana.
For months, the government denied the crisis in public finances until it was forced to admit what Albanians felt on a daily basis: a 1.3 billion euro burden on the budget for still unfinished construction.
Years pass, costs rise, and thousands of people still remain homeless, while the promise of reconstruction continues to be used as an electoral refrain of failure.
Why did the government prefer to pay 1.3 billion euros in Albanian taxes and not with EU funds? For a simple reason: EU funds are more economical, more transparent and do not allow for abuse.
The government chose the most expensive Eurobonds, burdening Albanians with high interest rates and long-term debt.
"The 2019 earthquake turned into an opportunity to enrich the ruling minority, while the majority of citizens foot the bill," the MP said.
