The increase in fuel costs has brought public transportation prices back into the spotlight, while the government has not yet made a clear decision on how to intervene.
Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi, confirmed that the executive is holding meetings with transport representatives, following their requests for a tariff review. He admitted that the possibility of restoring oil subsidies, a scheme used previously, is also on the table, but without giving a concrete deadline for a decision.
In parallel, the government mentions measures it has previously introduced to control prices, while associations are seeking immediate solutions to cover costs.
"Not more than two hours ago, together with the Minister of Economy and the Municipality of Tirana, they were in a meeting with transport associations. The crisis and price situation is being followed carefully. The government has announced several plans of measures, such as the establishment of the Transparency Board and excise duty.
"We know that during 2022, several subsidy acts were taken regarding associations, this element is being discussed again. But we are taking it into consideration along with other proposals made by transport associations," he said.
