The DP leadership seals a one-name race on May 23, while the figures who demanded resignation for losing the elections today do not articulate any position on the violation of the statute
Sali Berisha will run against himself in the May 23 elections for the leadership of the Democratic Party.
After 35 years in politics, where he eliminated every rival who threatened his position, this time he has decided not to accept any candidate, even a formal one, just like Ilir Meta, who in similar processes has produced facade candidates.
The DP leadership met today and approved only his candidacy. The decision reduces the May 23rd process to a single-name vote.
The element that aggravates the situation is the lack of any reaction within the party. Gazment Bardhi demanded the resignation of Lulzim Basha after the defeat in the elections. Today, faced with a case where the party statute is openly violated, he does not speak out. The article known as the “Basha Article” determines that whoever loses the elections leaves and does not run again. This is a written rule, not an interpretation.
Bardhi, Tabaku, Gjekmarkaj, Korreshi and others who articulated standards for internal democracy, today do not say a single sentence. Those who sought reform of the DP and presented themselves as "revolutionaries" do not react to a process without competition. When Bardhi called Berisha "the father of Zen", he also articulated ambitions for the leadership of the party. Today, one mandate as an MP is enough. The entire clash of a year ago ended with the entry into the elections, while now the result is collective silence.
This silence does not produce a political alternative. A party that accuses its opponent of electoral manipulation organizes a process with one candidate. A party that complains to the EU about democratic standards does not even apply the minimum of internal competition. The name “Democratic Party” remains formal when the real procedure excludes competition.
This model keeps the political balance unchanged. Edi Rama wins elections in the face of an opposition that does not produce internal challenges. In the DP, there is no opposition to the leader. The case of Ervin Salianj illustrates this mechanism. He opposed and was expelled. The others read the signal and chose silence. / Pamphlet
