A column of politicians from the Balkan countries traveled to Washington for Donald Trump's inauguration. Some boasted about their invitations, others seemed to have traveled simply to demonstrate their enthusiasm for the new president.
Former ministers, party leaders and right-wing Trump admirers in the Balkans traveled to Washington to attend Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony as US president. All tried to use the ceremony to connect with American politicians of the new administration.
Lulzim Basha, former head of the Democratic Party in Albania, shared a photo on social media from the pre-inauguration ball, where he met Trump's special envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, who was the envoy for Serbia-Kosovo talks under the first Trump administration.
" For Albanians, the US remains our ally and strategic partner. Strengthening cooperation and coordination with them is a major priority ," Basha wrote on Facebook on Monday.
The official Kosovo delegation was represented by Kosovo's Ambassador to the US, Ilir Dugolli. The Mayor of Pristina, Përparim Rama, attended the inauguration ball with his wife.
Also present was former Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, now the leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo party. Before the ceremony, he also met with Grenell and several US congressmen. Also present was former Kosovo President Behgjet Pacolli.
Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, co-leader of the "We Continue the Change" party, participated along with the other party leader, Assen Vasilev.
The events were “an opportunity to discuss important topics with other guests, including senators, congressmen, future members of Trump’s cabinet, and state governors,” Petkov wrote on social media. He posted a photo of his invitation, saying it came from “good friends in the Republican Party.”
Former Serbian Economy Minister Rade Basta, who had publicly boasted that he was invited to the inauguration, posted a photo on X from a previously held ball.
Basta was a minister during the current Serbian Progressive Party government, but is no longer part of it and has since founded the new "EU Path" movement.
" Honored to attend the Inaugural Ball celebrating the inauguration of President Donald Trump in Washington, DC. A truly unforgettable experience of this historic moment. Wishing the new administration great success ," Basta wrote.
Panos Kammenos, the former head of the far-right Greek Independent Greeks Party, which co-governed with the left-wing Syriza party between 2015 and 2019, posted a photo on X of his invitation to one of the inauguration events at Capital One.
Another right-winger, Stephen Nikola Bartulica, a Croatian member of the European Parliament, said he was invited to the inauguration and had met with members of the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists bloc in the European Parliament and their host in the US, Alabama Congressman Robert Aderholt.
" The interests of Croatia and our people are my top priority. The Croatian voice will be heard these days in Washington. I am convinced that better and more peaceful times await us ," Bartulica wrote on social networks. /Adapted from "Pamfleti" by "Balkan Insight"
