Chargé d'Affaires Nancy VanHorn spoke about the visit of SPAK leader Altin Dumani to the US.
The United States Charge d'Affaires, Nancy VanHorn, spoke today about the selection of the new Chief Prosecutor of SPAK and the Director of the BKH.
At the OSCE regional conference, VanHorn emphasized that the process of replacing Altin Dumani must be impartial, transparent and free from external influence.
VanHorn also emphasized that the priority of the Special Prosecutor's Office and the US is the fight against criminal organizations. According to her, the law enforcement partnership between the United States Department of Justice and SPAK was built over time.
VanHorn added that SPAK is only as effective as its independence in pursuing criminals, regardless of who they are affiliated with.
"Special Prosecutor Dumani was recently in Washington to discuss with our leadership how we fight crime together here and in the United States. However, the law enforcement partnership between our Department of Justice and SPAK was not built overnight. Together, we must protect what we have built.
SPAK is only as effective as its independence in pursuing criminals, regardless of who they are affiliated with. SPAK is also subject to the laws of Albania. Based on the law, Mr. Dumani, no matter how effective he has been, will be replaced, because his mandate has ended. The process of selecting Mr. Dumani’s successor must be impartial, transparent and free from external influences.
"Those who want to see Albania continue the fight against crime and corruption, including international partners, are very interested in this process and will follow it closely," said Nancy VanHorn.
