If Edi Rama publicly warned the 'dissatisfied' socialists to withdraw their demands for the filming, Sali Berisha chose to let them go free, so that they could take footage, but that was all. None of those who have claims and can demand the opening of ballot boxes and recounts of votes will be able to move the process forward if they are not supported by the party, in this case the DP...
The KAS decided yesterday not to accept the complaints of at least 4 democratic candidates who requested a recount of votes in the Tirana and Durrës Regions. At least two of the candidates, Ilir Alimehmeti and Aulon Kalaja, who received a significant number of preferential votes in the regions where they ran, may have a chance to receive a mandate as MP, if the votes are recounted.
Both Alimehmeti, who counts over 18 thousand votes in the Tirana District, and Kalaja, who has 7 thousand votes in the Durrës District, have raised allegations of irregularities, which if they have occurred as alleged, naturally raise suspicions also on the counters and commissioners representing the Democratic Party. The latter has declared that it does not recognize the May 11 elections, which it considers a farce, and accuses Prime Minister Edi Rama of distorting the results.
And referring to the public positions of the DP, the recount of votes could serve its cause, that is, to make public what happened with the elections, whether or not there was vote distortion, or more precisely which of the candidates had their votes stolen and which were added. All this serves the transparency of the process, but it seems to benefit neither Edi Rama nor Sali Berisha.
The latter publicly stated that he supports any candidate who would request a recount. And perhaps this guarantee has led some candidates to believe that they are so 'strong' that they will open the boxes and see what happened with the preferential votes. In fact, the KAS with 4 members, two from the DP and two from the SP, decided to use the precedent of 4 years ago, when one of the candidates at that time was denied the opening of the boxes and a recount.
KAS members threw the ball to the parties, stating that the recount of votes is their prerogative and not the candidates'.
If Edi Rama publicly warned the 'disgruntled' socialists to withdraw their demands for the filming, Sali Berisha chose to let them go free, meaning that they could take footage, but that was all. None of those who have claims and can demand the opening of ballot boxes and recounts of votes will be able to move the process forward if they are not supported by the party, in this case the DP.
In such conditions, there are two possibilities: either Berisha is acting like Rama, blocking the recount without supporting it in writing in the request to the KAS, or he has betrayed those who agreed to run on the open list.
In both the first and second cases, it seems that Berisha is showing his supporters that despite preferential votes, they have no value to him, because in the end, it is the party that decides. It has the seal, the tag, and above all, they have approved the electoral law in such a way that the candidates simply have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with what happened in the ballot box, but not to claim more.
From the videos of the counting process that were withdrawn by the CEC from one of the candidates, irregularities were identified, where at least for each ballot box there were deformations of 2, 3 or 4 votes, which were removed from one candidate and added to another, were considered invalid, or the votes were not reflected in the official result tables.
This is what has prompted one of the candidates to request a recount of votes, but as KAS decided, everything is in the hands of the party. It is not known whether Berisha's DP or its allies, who have no interest in this regard, will address KAS with requests for recounts, in support of those who have claims.
But as long as Berisha has chosen not to recognize the result, it seems that the party he leads will not enter the game to recount preferential votes, which at most could add one MP, as is the case in Tirana, by taking away the 'Opportunity' party, or in the other case they could only change the order of the candidates who receive the mandate. /Pamphlet/
