Oil prices only increase, Rama mocks citizens: We will protect pensioners
Edi Rama

As the price of oil continues to rise in the Albanian market, Prime Minister Edi Rama's priority is the protection of pensioners.

Rama stated that a task force has been set up to monitor the market and that no abuses have been identified, although the price of oil has increased. In response, the government has decided to activate the Transparency Board and temporarily reduce excise duty. He added that the additional revenues that will be generated from the price increase will be used to support pensioners, describing this category as the most vulnerable.

However, this approach raises some questions about the effectiveness and fairness of the policy pursued. In Albania, unlike many European countries, a large proportion of pensioners do not own vehicles and are not direct users of fuel. Consequently, the direct impact of oil prices on this category is limited.

On the other hand, the active layers of society, employees, small businesses, transporters and families that use vehicles, are more exposed to the increase in fuel prices. These categories face higher transportation and living costs every day, but are not mentioned as a priority in the Prime Minister's statements.

"At the same time, another decision has been made to intervene with a temporary measure, which other countries are also doing in the excise tax on oil, reducing it by about 20%, in order to ease, so to speak, the burden on vehicle users. But in the meantime, I want to say very, very clearly that at the end of the day, what interests us first is to protect pensioners, which means that in this case, the increased level of benefit that will come to the state coffers from the price increase, whatever it is, after the reduction in excise tax, will go only to protect pensioners, only to support pensioners," said Rama.

The Prime Minister announced the introduction of a new public factor into the market, which aims to influence the creation of a price balance and increase transparency in the oil market in Albania.

According to him, this intervention will also aim to combat oil evasion and smuggling, including abuses of the transit regime.
