Here's how the preferential vote is distributed in each district...
With 5,185 out of 5,225 ballot boxes counted across the country, the Socialist Party confirms its lead in the May 11 parliamentary elections, securing 52.2% of the vote and a clear majority in the new Assembly. With 763,708 votes won so far, the SP is expected to secure 83 seats, leading Edi Rama to a fourth term in office, an unprecedented precedent in post-communist Albanian politics.
On the other hand, the DP-ASHM coalition, led by Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta, has received 497,531 votes, which translates into 34.2% of national support and 50 seats in Parliament – a result that places the opposition in second position, but far from directly influencing the majority.
But as the count draws to a close, and the counting of ballot boxes nears completion across the country, the race for the preferential vote is bringing about noticeable changes in the internal rankings of the candidates.
In Tirana alone, where the Socialist Party has secured 19 seats, 7 of them come from the open list, with names like Blendi Gonxhja, Fatmir Xhafaj, Erion Braçe and Ornaldo Rakipi having won seats through the personal support of voters. Even female candidates like Antonela Dedej and Anila Denaj have crossed the line to enter the Assembly.
In other regions, such as Fier, Gjirokastër and Durrës, preferential voting has brought new names to the fore, while some well-known figures have been left behind. Some candidates have secured mandates with over 7,000 personal votes, a clear indication of the direct influence of citizens on political representation.
The open list, implemented for the first time in this form, is proving to be a reformatting element within the parties themselves, strengthening the connection between the voter and his real representative in the Assembly.
