The victims of May 28, 1996

Prime Minister Edi Rama has published on social media a video from 30 years ago, where leaders of the Socialist Party, the then opposition, were raped and bloodied by police forces and SHIK, during a protest opposing the results of the May 26, 1996 elections.

"With a date that speaks of two worlds, I wish you a good day," Rama writes on social media, publishing both images of violence, but also what is happening today with integration.

The Prime Minister has chosen to make a montage with images of violence against the opposition in what is known as Sali Berisha's first government and the steps Albania has taken in the integration processes, where Edi Rama has taken the role of protagonist in relation to Brussels.

At that time, almost all the leaders and politicians of the Socialist Party and its allies were brutally raped by security forces during a rally in Skanderbeg Square. Not even foreign reporters were spared the violence, and for years the scenes of violence made the rounds of the world, showing the face of a government that was completely controlled by Sali Berisha, at that time President of the Republic.

Servet Pëllumbi, Ndre Legisi, Erion Braçe, Gaqo Apostoli, Blendi Gonxhe, were among the politicians who experienced the animalistic violence of policemen in spacesuits and rubber batons, but also of civilians of the then SHIK, which was led by Bashkim Gazidede and operated under the orders of Sali Berisha.

The protest of May 28, 1996 was a response by the then opposition to the massive vote manipulation on May 26, where ballot boxes were forcibly filled by SHIK agents and criminal police, while this was one of the events that marked the collapse of Sali Berisha's government.
