The leader of the Democratic Party said that he fought the battle against the "non grata" American sanctions alone and in the interest of Albania, as the aim was to annihilate the opposition.
In an interview for "Opinion", Berisha said that former US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sought to harm him at all costs.
According to Berisha, he sent a well-known diplomat to Tirana who met with Edi Rama and Lulzim Basha, demanding their expulsion from Parliament.
Regarding a possible trip to the US after the news that the Trump administration has considered the Biden government's political decision to sanction "non grata", Sali Berisha says that there is nothing planned as this news was unexpected for him too.
Fatos Hakorja: If it is really going to be taken, a decision will be made to officially lift the non grata sanction, which I certainly believe is a historic victory because it has never happened that someone who is in the opposition fought a battle to take over the DP, to take the American Secretary of State to court, etc., it is a strong battle, but would it be a personal victory or a victory of the DP? Because at the time you were sanctioned you did not have a function in the DP except as a simple MP. Is this your victory or is it a victory of the entire opposition? Second, do you plan to travel to the USA soon?
Sali Berisha: Absolutely from September 10, 2021 until today, I have a mission not for myself. From May 19, 2021 until September 10, Sali Berisha has continued the battle alone and calmly and convinced that he will succeed. I chose a practice. I was not someone I did not know, I informed the entire elite of the world, that letter that I sent to Antony Blinken on the day he announced it, the entire elite of the world and the media received it. The fact that I did my civic duty to represent every Albanian citizen with dignity, I took him to court, this took them out of any kind of standard and they rushed, since they had no facts, they rushed to harm me at all costs with political decisions. Philip Reeker came here, a man for whom I had a lot of respect, I had worked with him who knows how many times on Balkan issues and demanded that Berisha not enter Parliament. It came from Blinken, Blinken took it.
Blendi Fevziu: Who did you ask?
Sali Berisha: He asked Edi Rama, Lulzim Basha. Lulzim Basha tells me. I say, tell him now Mr. Reeker that no nation has done as much for our freedom as the American nation has done, they have never done this to make the list of deputies that it is an exclusive attribute of Albanian citizens and it cannot happen because it is to take away the sovereignty of a country. We disagree here. This is where it all started. I had to protect the sovereignty of my country. That this man with Edi Rama who wanted to erase the 32-year history of a country that had had some of its most culminating moments with the USA, they wanted to dictate who should be in Parliament and who should not be and who should be the leader of the opposition and who should not be. My battle was never more personal, it was a battle that my country should have an uncontrolled opposition.
Fatos Hakorja: When did you plan to travel to America?
Sali Berisha: Last night I received the news, I had no plan. There were two lines that were followed. One was the visa blockade, the other was isolation. And with isolation, they failed, the one who thought of it, Edi Rama. I have here the messages that Rama sent to the MEPs about the resolutions, shameful. He sent messages not to vote for those resolutions. And to whom? The center-right.
