Erald Kapri's "Mundësia" party and Arlind Qori's "Lëvizja Bashkë" declare that the return of pre-election coalitions and the reduction of the number of deputies, proposals by the DP and the SP, aim to weaken the new forces, not improve the system. They also warn that these interventions endanger the competition and the representation of citizens.
"The change to a national proportional system, even with an open list that at first glance may seem more democratic, actually aims to hit the new parties because they will set a high threshold. If you look, none of them dares to say what the threshold is and setting a high threshold would be a direct blow not just to us, the new parties, but to democracy and plurality in Albania. The plan to reduce the number of deputies from 140 to 101 aims precisely to make it difficult or impossible for other parties to enter the elections. So this is all a farce, it is all an opportunity to hit political plurality in Albania ," said the deputy of the Mundësia Party, Erald Kapri.
"The aim is to exclude from the possibility of being represented new parties, vital parties and especially parties that will not accept to enter into coalitions with old parties. From what I understand is that if a new party chooses to enter into a coalition with a traditional party like the SP or the DP, the real threshold for them will be much lower than a party that chooses to compete alone. But the reduction in the number of deputies automatically increases the threshold of representation in parliament. Our proposal is that if it is a problem and the problem is in fact the expenses of deputies, this can be solved by reducing the salaries of deputies and above all by reducing their per diems, which are absurd", said the leader of the Joint Movement, Arlind Qori for "RTSH".
According to them, the changes in the reform should focus on the financing of political parties. Kapri emphasizes that if a solution is not given to the source of money for corruption and electoral crime, there cannot be fair and free elections.
"For us, the law on financing political parties is paramount, because dirty money, the money of the oligarchs, seriously compromises the party system in Albania and turns parties into instruments of the interests of the oligarchs against the public interest," said Qori.
"Without addressing the source of corruption and crime money in elections, there cannot be truly free and fair elections. The majority and the opposition do not seek transparency in campaign spending," Kapri stressed.
According to representatives, without addressing these elements, any change in the system risks deepening political inequalities in the country.
