Foreign Minister Elisa Spiropali, in a rare press conference from the Rama cabinet, answered questions regarding the war that the US has launched against criminal groups, mentioning Albania, which is also facing such phenomena.
Spiropali says that the US partnership with Albania not only remains unwavering, but has been further strengthened and that a common priority is the fight against corruption, crime and drug trafficking. Among other things, Spiropali, referring to EU reports, emphasizes Albania's positioning as a vanguard state in the Western Balkans in the fight against crime.
Referring to the question about the island of Sazan, where Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will make an investment, Spiropali says that this is a project part of Albania's larger development project and partnerships.
"I believe you are referring to Secretary of State Marco Rubio's declared priority for the fight against cartels. But also their priority for the fight against organized crime. At no point did Secretary Rubio refer to Albania, which is not exempt from such phenomena, but which neither Albanians as an ethnicity nor other countries where these appear are held responsible, just as all other countries have their challenges when it comes to the fight against organized crime. What is clear and I believe is as clear as daylight, is that Albania and the US have a strong strategic partnership that has not wavered, and as you can see, of course this partnership is unwavering. Albania in EU reports results as a country that today has the fight against corruption, organized crime, and the independence of the judiciary at the highest level, at least for the Western Balkans region.
The rest are political speculations that can be temporarily lived, but do not create a credible or sustainable alternative. Ivanka Trump, not only the president's family, but all officials are welcome in Albania and we are not obliged to provide information about their visits, whether private or official. There are no plans for land forgiveness. No one is asking Albania to forgive land, but there are serious projects that are part of our development projects, " said Spiropali.
