The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, received today in a meeting the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa.
During the meeting, Albania's progress in the negotiation process with the European Union was assessed, including the holding of the 8th EU-Albania Intergovernmental Conference, which confirmed the fulfillment of the interim criteria for Chapter 1, "Fundamentals".
The Head of State conveyed to President Costa Albania's determination to fulfill the agenda and objectives aimed at closing the group chapters within 2027.
"Judicial reform, strengthening the rule of law, the fight against corruption and organized crime, as well as full compliance with the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy prove that Albania is a reliable partner and willing to be part of the European family," said the Head of State.
President Begaj emphasized that the expansion of the European Union towards the Western Balkans is of strategic importance for the entire continent.
"The EU enlargement to the Western Balkans is not just an integration process, but a strategic investment for the peace, security and stability of the entire European continent," declared President Begaj, thanking President Costa for prioritizing the EU enlargement process with the Western Balkan countries during his mandate.
Next, Begaj expressed his gratitude for the support that European institutions are providing to Albania in the integration process.
"Albania is grateful for the strong support that the Council and the Commission are giving Albania on this journey. Albania will continue with a fast pace and concrete results on its path towards membership in the European Union. We are convinced that we do not carry out reforms only as EU requirements, but above all for our citizens," he said.
