The Greek government has officially reacted to the dinner held today with the leaders of the region, to which Prime Minister Edi Rama was not invited. Mitsotakis gathered the leaders of the entire Balkans and EU officials, trying to show that Athens is committed to the integration of the region.
The meeting was definitely a message to Tirana, since the arrest of Fredi Beleri has significantly tensed the situation and Greece is threatening to block integration.
Mitsotakis did not invite Rama to the meeting, sending an invitation to Bajram Begaj. The latter refused. Everyone understood that it was a maneuver by the Greek government, which has openly admitted it today. After the dinner, the spokesperson of the Greek government spoke, continuing with the threats.
" I think we all understand that it was not possible to invite Mr. Rama to such an important initiative. By this we mean that Albania's European path passes through basic respect for the norms and rules of European law. Anyway, the president of Albania was invited, who refused to participate ", said Pavlos Marinakis.
The informal dinner in Athens was organized on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the EU-Western Balkans Summit and the "Declaration of Thessaloniki". The leaders of Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia and the head of the EC, Ursula Von der Leyen, took part there.
Athens and Tirana clashed fiercely over Beler's case. Although the latter was caught buying votes, Athens has given itself the right to oppose justice and demand his release. Justice has so far not been obeyed and threats of funding cuts and blocking integration have begun.
